Pirates. (again)

Last night Ryan and I went to the movies. We saw Pirates 3, since it’s at the dollar movies now and Ryan hadn’t seen it yet. Watching if for the third time, I caught a lot of little things I didn’t really notice originally, and it got me thinking about all the different levels in a movie.

Really, you’re doing something right if you can create a movie with so many different levels of understanding that a kid can watch and follow, the casual moviegoer can enjoy and follow, and a die-hard fan can constantly watch and look for new things to understand completely.

I just found so many instances where, originally I understood what was being said and done to a point where everything made perfect sense, but something would just hit me and suddenly I understood what they were truly talking about. For instance, in the end when Bootstrap refers to still owing a debt, it’s simple enough to see it as just his way of staying on. This is all well and good and keeps things rolling. But thinking on it, you notice the subtle nuances that point you in the direction of seeing he’s referring to owing Will, for all those years without a father. Not the most complicated example, but I think it’ll suffice to give you an idea of what I mean.

I guess it just really never occurred to me how complicated it can be to  make a movie the general public can follow and enjoy without just flat out dumbing everything down. You can get as much out of it as you’re willing to look for. I think that’s just fantastic.

Now for the really girly part of this post.

Jesus H! I honestly think, at this point in time, I’d have to say Will Turner, in the end of this movie, is the sexiest character I’ve ever seen. All three times I’ve seen this movie so far, I’ve obsessed over Will for days after. I found myself getting way too excited to know he was coming soon.

I couldn’t find any fantastic caps of him as captain yet. I’ll probably have to wait until the DVD hits to get any really good  ones. I could watch the end of that movie over and over again just to watch him. *swoon* I need to go take a cold shower now.

Superbad

This has totally been my summer for movies! Every time I turn around, there’s another one coming out that I have to see! Up next on my list is Superbad! Seth and Evan are two co-dependent High School buds who’ve just found out they’ve been accepted to different colleges. Now’s the time, they’ve decided, to go all out and change their social status with one huge party that goes…not totally according to plan–of course!

The trailers and clips are cracking me up, and I know there’s so much more to come. They’ve taken over the Youtube homepage for the day (August 1st) so now’s the best time to see exactly what I’m talking about! (You can find 3 unedited clips on their site.) My personal favorite is Seth’s intro–the scene from Home Economics. I had FIVE Home Ec classes in High School that I never asked for! I feel his pain! I have no desire to ever again make another Crème Brûlée!

It probably doesn’t help that I’m a little partial to Jonah Hill. I’ve really enjoyed watching his career take off. He’s been in a lot of my most recent favorite comedies–namely the ones we watch constantly here in the apartment. I’m excited to see him in a larger role!

I keep cracking up over Evan’s video as well. He reminds me so much of someone I’ve known since High School. They favor each other as well! It’s weirding me out a little.

I also find it incredible that the writers, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, starting writing this script when they were only 14. “We just wanted to see if we could write a movie.” Man…apparently I was a waste of space when I was 14. I never wrote any movies, or won any prestigious medals, or cured any diseases…I should probably get on that now.

Anyway, stop reading my ramblings and go watch some clips for yourself. You know it’s about time you got ready to get out of the computer chair and out to see a movie anyway! This is the first ever Youtube homepage takeover, so let’s make it huge!

Want more? You can go to the Superbad official site for downloadable ringtones and wallpapers, maybe even some buddy icons if you’re Superbad enough.

I am up to no good…

We’re definitely going to see Harry Potter this afternoon and basically…I’m excited. I’m really glad I’ve read all the books now. So far, the movie hasn’t gotten the best reviews, but the reviewers have all been quick to point out that it’s not really mean in a negative way, but this was the longest book and it sets up a lot of things that are coming so there’s a lot of character introduction and deeper explanation of things of things in general so there’s not so much action. So it’s not so much that they’re waving it off as a bad movie, but that they’re seeing it as being the least enticing of the series (including future movies). I understand that view, but for me, that’s really exciting. There really is a lot in this story and I’m really excited to see how much of it they’ll actually be bringing out. There are a lot of side stories that haven’t really been developed thus far in the movies, that, in my opinion, play a pretty big role in the coming stories, so I’m hoping a lot of that will be fleshed out.

In other wizarding news, it’s been confirmed that we’ll be getting a Harry Potter theme park!! “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” at Islands of Adventure at Universal Studios, Orlando, Florida has been approved by J.K. Rowling. According to her, “The plans I’ve seen look incredibly exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed.”

There are some pretty up-to-date articles here.

I’m really excited about the park. I’m gonna be really impatient when it’s finally ready, but I hate going to places when they first open. It’s always so crowded and there are always little kinks to work out. I’d love for it to be like a Parkview trip with me, Ryan, Andrew and Andy being the key participants in the trip. I think it’d be so much fun and it’s definitely something I’d have more fun doing with a group of Potter fans.

Why does my head always itch right after I pain my nails?

The King is back…

After his young daughter’s death, Mike Enslin (John Cusack) doesn’t believe in the paranormal. He’ll only believe what he can see for himself. For his latest novel discrediting the paranormal, “Ten Nights in Haunted Hotel Rooms,” Enslin checks into Suite 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel. In the 95 years of the hotel’s existence, there have been 56 occupants of Suite 1408–none of them have survived over an hour. Will Enslin survive and become a believer?

Based on a Stephen King story, the 1408 Movie promises to be a real treat. I myself have been a fan of Stephen King movies since my childhood, and later a fan of his novels. Who could ever hope to forget Pennywise the clown from Stephen King’s “IT”? If Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper” comes on my ipod, my thoughts immediately go to the 6 hour “The Stand.” I even loved the somewhat bizarre “Dreamcatcher”– SSDD!! I’m quite curious to see if King will make a cameo appearance in the 1408 Movie, as he quite often does in movies based on his works. Maybe he’ll show up as a bellhop or something like that, eh?Check out this trailer:

This won’t be one I’ll be able to miss in theaters. King definitely has it covered when it comes to giving me the creeps, and I absolutely love it. Now I’m thinking when I finish Harry Potter I may immerse myself in some Stephen King until I get to see this movie.

And really bad eggs

I read a review of Pirates a little earlier that really annoyed me. Why is it such a popular idea to find something about the latest box office hit to bash? This particular reviewer had the gall to comment on the lack of story….ladies and gents, I’m here to say that while I was sitting there in the theater all I could think about was how great it was that there was so much going on in the story that it was hard to even keep up with just exactly what was going on! It was done in a great way though so that you weren’t really lost, just a little fuzzy on the who’s and what’s.

He also complained that the last one wasn’t really a cliffhanger because we all knew Jack would be back. Umm….duh? For me, that wasn’t the cliffhanger aspect. Of course they’re going to get Jack, we all know this, but OMG, what’s World’s End like? How are they gonna get there? Will they be able to bring him back?! You weren’t meant to be in suspense over whether or not Jack would be back…

I can’t take it anymore. I’m bursting to talk about it, so I’m posting spoilers behind the fake cut. PLEASE, do NOT read this if you haven’t seen the movie. Not only will I be furious with you, but you will absolutely ruin the entire movie for yourself as you’ll kill every ounce of suspense for a movie that thrives on exactly that.

Follow the flash of green.

*sigh*

I’m basically in awe, and like, no one else I know went to see Pirates tonight and I can’t bring myself to do a spoilers cut ’cause I know how tempting that’d be for people to read. So I’ll just say a few vague things. My peanut. Multiple personalities. And holy hell how did they manage to make Will Turner EVEN HOTTER. By the end of the move he was totally channeling Cary Elwes ala Dread Pirate Roberts (Princess Bride) and doing it much better. Damn.

And OMG! I had to contain myself during the previews because I was alone and had no one to exclaim my deep dorky happiness! They’re making one of my favorite book series into a movie!!! The ‘His Dark Materials’ series by Phillip Pullman consisting of The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass….well, I can only hope they’ll all be done as they’re doing the Golden Compass. I’m ridiculously excited and a bit apprehensive all at once because well, they’re very fantasy-intensive and it’s hard to top what one’s imagination can come up with in reading under the constraints of just what you can manage in 2 hours of film. I want to look into it a little more and check out some of the other things the directors and such have done. Of course this also gives me an excuse to make myself read the books a third time (note, I very rarely read books more than once….) Do yourself a favor and look them up!
