Last night I needed to paste in information I’d been diligently working on from an Excel spreadsheet to a blog entry via Wordpress. I quickly learned that it just can’t be done that way. Once you’ve saved or published, only the first line of your information remains.
I searched around and tried 3 different programs that either flat-out didn’t work, wanted me to recreate the table cell by cell, or limited how big your table could be. No good! I finally found someone who gave me a great idea of how to do it, but since they were buried in the results, and only gave a quick overview of what to do, I thought I’d list the steps here to spread the idea.
First you want to navigate to Google Documents. Of course you have to login to use their services, so if you don’t already have a Gmail account, now’s the time to get one
Once you’ve logged in, on the left side you want to choose NEW and then the type of file you want to create (Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, or Folder). In my case, I was pasting from an already created spreadsheet and just wanted my info to stay organized and aligned, so I chose document.
Another window will open–it’s a text editor. It defaults to naming it Untitled, but if you’d like for it to be saved so that you may work with it later, you want to click FILE–>RENAME.
Now simply paste your info (or start new info) into the editor and go to it! You can format any way you need to here–adding colors and changing text, etc.
When you’re done, you’ll want to click EDIT–>EDIT HTML. Once the screen reloads with your html, you want to paste all that info into the code editor for your post in Wordpress. And that’s it! Now you can save and close your Google Document and publish your blog entry which will be perfection! Just double-check that you’ve formatted your table in a way that isn’t too wide for your theme and you’re good to go!
I hope this helps someone, and I hope I’ve explained it clearly.
I’m glad I found this too; this is a pretty good place to maybe keep documents you don’t want lying around on your computer memory, like my Christmas lists I make every year and the year-round gift ideas I keep up. I’m always trying to disguise those but now I can just store them here. Dunno how I overlooked the service for so long.
Speaking of my taxes, I know this time of year is when most people think about what they want to spend ‘extra’ money on. A lot of bloggers are buying new hosting or moving to new hosts while they’ve got the money to do this. I’ve considered moving myself–not because I have a problem with my current host, but because I hear of other hosts who are just as good and more user-friendly.
It’s really hard to gather enough research to feel comfortable with making a definite decision on something like that though.
Today, I found WebHostingBluebook.net which I think is an awesome idea. Already I’ve gotten some information on some of the hosts I was considering, such as 1and1, and bluehost. They’ve got charts breaking hosts down into price, setup cost, domain cost, disk space, bandwidth, overall rating and reviews. This could be a good place to start my research.
I was watching a video on YouTube one night, and in the video responses, I saw a video entitled “Rick Rolled.”
It was obvious this video had nothing to do with the one I was currently watching, but I was intrigued nonetheless.
What I found was something part of an apparent internet fad I somehow missed out on. Were you guys familiar with this?
“Rick Rolling” is linking a person to a video of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The trick is disguising the link so that the person doesn’t know that’s where it leads. The ‘rules’ are that you must watch the video in its entirety.
The more interesting version is a website that plays the video. Upon entering the site, your window dances around the screen before settling. If you try to navigate away, you’re greeted with information boxes containing the lyrics line by line. Ctrl+Alt+Del is your best method to get out. You can see it here, but remember, I warned you!
There are also a ton of variations and edits around YouTube if you just search for a minute. Some of them are pretty hilarious.
I’ve fallen in love with this app on Facebook. It was originally called “My Christmas Tree” but now goes by the name of “Festive Events” as they’ve added (and are continuing to add) other events.
I’ll describe it in regards to Christmas for the sake of simplicity, but keep in mind, this applies to other holidays and events as well.
First you select your decoration and a song. I’ve got a Jack Skellington Christmas tree and my song is “Making Christmas” from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to send presents!
They’ve got all kinds of great things to choose from like popular electronics, joke gifts, cars, even a date with Johnny Depp. Then you’ll choose from a variety of little gift boxes, bags or stockings.
Finally, you write in a little message to your friend and select your options of the date it’s to be sent and if the message is to be hidden until the specified date as well.
Obviously, I haven’t seen the unwrapping in action yet, but according to the app, on the day specified (currently Christmas) you get to ‘unwrap’ each gift individually!
I think it’s great! It’s a great way to show all those friends you wouldn’t normally want to dole out cash on that you’re thinking of them! I can’t wait to see what some of my friends have picked out for me. I’ve been giving a lot of people the gifts I’d like to get for them if money wasn’t in the way
If the above link doesn’t take you to the app, you can check out my profile and just scroll down to the Jack Skellington tree. Feel free to send some gifts my way!
I’m off to look through everything they’ve got and see if I can find some bodybuilding supplements to my brother as a joke. He…well, let’s just say it’s sort of an inside joke haha.
I just wanted to take a moment and let you guys know a little about Car Angel. Car Angel is a non-profit organization that takes car donations (and other donations, of course) to “help single mothers, homeless, teen and adult rehab, food distribution and orphans.”
They use donations to create children’s dvds, anti-drug videos and prison literature. To date, they’ve given away over 2.4 million videos.
I know it’s not a common thing to have a car you can just donate, rather than sale, but chances are at some point in you’re life, you’ll be left with a car that just isn’t worth the hassle of selling. This would be a great alternative. They make all the arrangements for pickup, repairs, title transfers–everything. It’s something to consider as an option, and you’d be helping yourself as well with a tax deduction come April.
Here’s an example of some of the dvds they produce. This one is a religious story, with Spanish subtitles.
The Gallery Collection has teamed up with Soldiers’ Angels and donated a greeting card to be sent to each soldier, wishing them Happy Holidays, Happy New Year, and thanks them for all they’ve done. They’ve also donated a blank card and envelope for each one to write home. The cards will be included in a care package sent by Soldiers’ Angels.
It’s a wonderful sentiment to be expressed through the holidays. I’m sure this is the hardest time of year for those so far away from their families.
The Gallery Collection is a mail order company in the Christmas Cards business–currently the “leading mail order publisher of premium quality personalized greetings cards.”
So often now we see such thoughtless, mass produced cards–The Gallery Collection offers some truly beautiful pieces that your loved ones will just have to put out for display. I wish Lowe’s would consider using them this year when we get our bonus coupons. Melissa always picks out such crappy little cards…
Maybe I’m missing something, but I totally don’t understand why people are still under the assumption that the fall in PR was all Google punishing people with paid links.
People are still completely stuck on that idea, even though it keeps being brought up that, “oh well this site that doesn’t have any paid links whatsoever also went down.”
Why can’t we all be under the more logical assumption that Google just did a total revamp of how they determine PR? I mean, after all, it took a ridiculously long time for an update to occur. They were doing something all that time.
And everyone is all frantic about how it’s going to change their income. This isn’t the end of the world guys. It sucks for the moment, but when it all settles, everyone–including advertisers–will acclimate to this new PR.
Again, maybe I’m missing something, but that’s the way I see it.
I’m annoyed with PR falling as well. I fully expected to have a PR 3 on this blog. I know it was a pretty cocky notion, but I just knew I would be. I would’ve been mostly satisfied with even a 2, but here I am with a 1. I had up to 10 data centers showing a 2 when all the shuffling started, but they ended up falling back to a 1. I think I’m still holding out a little hope that it’s not all completely done and I’ll see a movement again–at least to a 2. I just wanted to know what my hard work had earned…
So NBC has done away with their YouTube channel to start their own site–hulu.com. You can read more about it on their blog. I’m all in favor of the concept of hulu. It looks as though there will be full episodes available, as well as talk of some full length films. My annoyance lies in their reasoning–their motivation.
You can read for yourself what NBC Universal chief executive Jeff Zucker had to say about their past, now ended, partnership with iTunes, but I have a few things I’d like to call bullshit on.
“We know that Apple has destroyed the music business — in terms of pricing — and if we don’t take control, they’ll do the same thing on the video side,”
Wait, you mean that whole thing where people are more likely to actually pay for their music since they can now pay for just that one song instead of having to buy a whole album? I’ve paid for SO much more music than I used to since iTunes came around. I didn’t even do this with Napster, but with iTunes, I’ve already got the software because I need it for my iPod, and oh look! There’s a handy little store where I can use PayPal to pay less than a dollar for a song! I can do that.
NBC originally claimed to be seeking more control over the pricing of songs and videos that it was selling on iTunes, in addition to better piracy controls and more flexibility to bundle video content in an effort to increase revenues.
For its part in the bitter feud, Apple responded by saying NBC was asking for a twofold increase in the wholesale price of its TV show content, which would have resulted in the retail price to iTunes customers increasing to $4.99 per episode from $1.99.
Answering questions at the breakfast Sunday, Zucker offered substantially more color on the iTunes matter, explaining that it was “a relatively easy decision” for NBC to walk away from the Apple download service because it had only earned about $15 million from the service last year in spite of accounting for about 40 per cent of the videos sold on the store.
He said NBC routinely propositioned Apple to breach its standard pricing model and experiment with higher pricing for one hit show such as “Heroes” by raising the price from the iTunes standard $1.99 to $2.99 on a trial basis.
Awl only $15 million? As opposed to nothing? That’s heartbreaking guys…really.
$2.99 or $4.99, either way, charging that much is ridiculous. That’s more than you’ll pay for a physical copy of the show. I understand you’re also paying for the convenience of having it right now, but even at $2.99, I’ll save my $70 to buy the dvds later–for now I’ll download the show and you’ll get nothing. At $1.99, you’re leaving the door open for people not to feel completely ridiculous if they download the show, and then later decide to buy the dvd.
“Apple sold millions of dollars worth of hardware off the back of our content and made a lot of money,” he said. “They did not want to share in what they were making off the hardware or allow us to adjust pricing.”
Wow, you’re giving yourself a whollle lotta credit there darlin. I own an iPod to listen to music. If I can watch episodes of my favorite shows between classes as well, then that’s just icing on the cake, but I don’t currently know anyone who bought an iPod specifically so they could watch tv on it. I’m sure those people are out there, but I feel certain they’re in the minority.
Get over yourselves NBC. You’re a great network, but it’s not up to you to decide it’s time to change the way we watch television online. Especially when you want to bring ridiculous ideas to the table.
So I’ve had some time to really think over the whole Dumbledore debacle and I’ve collected my thoughts.
I’ve spoken with people who aren’t at all homophobic, but are still upset that Rowling made the announcement. They feel like it was a mistake and she should’ve kept that to herself. To that I say, “Huh?” Rowling has endured plenty of backlash since book one on claims of witchcraft, and devilry in general. Why would she be worried about the impact of Dumbledore being gay?
When it comes down to it, this is her work. Who are we to tell her she should change it? These are purely her characters.
As for the rest of the bit who are appalled and now refuse to have anything to do with Harry Potter–is there any absolute mention in the books? Was he not gay before you started reading? You loved the series and he was gay all along; what’s changed? Not a damn thing. Get over it.
And for those out there jumping to ideas of pedophilia–excuse me, but you should probably pull your head out of your ass. ‘Gay’ and ‘pedophile’ are NOT synonymous. Buy a dictionary. While you’re at it, buy a new brain–perhaps one capable of being open. You’re really pushing it to suddenly decide that Dumbledore being gay means his relationship with Harry or any of the other students was inappropriate. Did anything in the stories give you that idea beforehand? Then what the hell has changed?!
On a lighter note, it’s good to see there are people out there capable of having fun with this! Kristi sent me this link earlier this week, but I wanted to keep it all together.
By now we all know that JK Rowling shocked the wizarding world last weekend by outing beloved grandfatherly wizard Albus Dumbledore as being gay. BWE.tv has leared exclusively, through our shadowy network of wizard tabloid operatives, that Rowling made the announcement only to pre-empt the shocking expose in this week’s People Magazine based on magical gossipmongering blogger Rita Skeeter’s sordid allegations about the wizard’s sexuality. Here’s an exclusive preview of the magazine.
Back when PPP started using CAPTCHA, I clicked around to look all into what reCAPTCHA, the system they’re utilizing, was all about. I was actually really intrigued by what I found, and I’ve been meaning to discuss it for a while.
Roughly 60 million CAPTCHAS are solved by users daily. What reCAPTCHA does is uses that for an actual purpose–’reading’ books.
To archive human knowledge and to make information more accessible to the world, multiple projects are currently digitizing physical books that were written before the computer age. The book pages are being photographically scanned, and then, to make them searchable, transformed into text using “Optical Character Recognition” (OCR). The transformation into text is useful because scanning a book produces images, which are difficult to store on small devices, expensive to download, and cannot be searched. The problem is that OCR is not perfect.
So how does this work? reCAPTCHA takes one of the words that OCR doesn’t recognize, and pairs it with a word already known. It’s assumed that if the reader gets the known word correct, then the unknown word is also correct. The system then gives the unknown word to a number of other users before being satisfied that they have the word solved.
I just think it’s really awesome to have turned such an average task, such a small, daily task, into something really useful.
