How to create tables in Wordpress

Web Add comments

Last night I needed to paste in information I’d been diligently working on from an Excel spreadsheet to a blog entry via Wordpress. I quickly learned that it just can’t be done that way. Once you’ve saved or published, only the first line of your information remains.

I searched around and tried 3 different programs that either flat-out didn’t work, wanted me to recreate the table cell by cell, or limited how big your table could be. No good! I finally found someone who gave me a great idea of how to do it, but since they were buried in the results, and only gave a quick overview of what to do, I thought I’d list the steps here to spread the idea.

First you want to navigate to Google Documents. Of course you have to login to use their services, so if you don’t already have a Gmail account, now’s the time to get one

Once you’ve logged in, on the left side you want to choose NEW and then the type of file you want to create (Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, or Folder). In my case, I was pasting from an already created spreadsheet and just wanted my info to stay organized and aligned, so I chose document.

Another window will open–it’s a text editor. It defaults to naming it Untitled, but if you’d like for it to be saved so that you may work with it later, you want to click FILE–>RENAME.

Now simply paste your info (or start new info) into the editor and go to it! You can format any way you need to here–adding colors and changing text, etc.

When you’re done, you’ll want to click EDIT–>EDIT HTML. Once the screen reloads with your html, you want to paste all that info into the code editor for your post in Wordpress. And that’s it! Now you can save and close your Google Document and publish your blog entry which will be perfection! Just double-check that you’ve formatted your table in a way that isn’t too wide for your theme and you’re good to go!

I hope this helps someone, and I hope I’ve explained it clearly.

I’m glad I found this too; this is a pretty good place to maybe keep documents you don’t want lying around on your computer memory, like my Christmas lists I make every year and the year-round gift ideas I keep up. I’m always trying to disguise those but now I can just store them here. Dunno how I overlooked the service for so long.
