I know there are still so many questions concerning how the second shootings were able to start at Virginia Tech yesterday. Many of the discussions I’ve seen or been a part of have hit on the point that a University-wide lockdown just isn’t as easy to establish and maintain as it is in say a High School. I mean, at a large University there’s just no way to communicate to everyone there at once, much less those in transit.
With all this in mind I’m very excited that VSU is taking preventative action and has created the VSU Campus Alert system. This is the email I just received:
Dear Students,
The VSU Campus Alert system has been provided so that campus administrators
can quickly communicate with students, faculty, and staff in the event of an
urgent situation on campus such as class cancellations, campus closings,
severe weather, or security incidents. Please take a few minutes today and
enter your telephone number (presumably your cell phone number) at which you
want to receive these alerts using the link below. The privacy and priority
of this information will be preserved and will not be shared with third
parties for commercial purposes or other purposes than this notification
system. We will begin collecting numbers the week of April 17 and test the
system on or before the last day of classes, April 30.http://www.valdosta.edu/editalertinfo
I’m glad they’re learning from this tragedy and making efforts to keep the students safe and informed, as I’m sure there were many students involved in this disaster that simply had no idea anything was even awry until they arrived at the school, otherwise, I’m sure many of them never would’ve shown up in the first place.
